one day im going to pass this test

I guess im writing less text these days because Im conceptually starting to understand things a little better. The 70-411 questions are a little more in depth but the general knowledge base of questions still seems to be the same. I doubt I will have this bank of questions done before I go back to class but I should have a good chunk of it done which should lead to a better understanding of what’s demonstrated in class. It seems like almost an impossibility to get that last 50 points but it might just be doable. We will see how it goes. Then it still seems like a long shot with a certification of finding some kind of employment but the best I can do is try at this point in time. Hope for the best and trust that society rewards those that work hard. However I do have to say im getting a great deal of satisfaction out of what im doing and realizing that im extremely fortunate to have this opportunity as a job at a kroger or something like that seems to be off the table.

The first question is about proper addressing in what im going to refer to (probably incorrectly) as a domain PS line to find a specific OU when using ADSI to create a rule. Im glad that they include a little of this as its generally over my head and it seems like its some thing best left for programmers but given that it could still be around when im of a level of understanding thats good enough enough to use it I would love to learn it. I dont really care why we are not creating a GPO and using ADSI instead but the naming conventions should stay universal if using a command line style format. Canonical name (nice bible reference there msft), org unit, dc, dc.

Exhibits are rarely helpful and while im on unfamiliar territory im pretty sure this is still the case here.

However the answer is actually extremely helpful. Just wish measureup provided links to videos in some cases or made them.

This one is a little different and a good reminder of just what NTDSUTIL can be used for. The PS string is also a nice reference.

I would absolutely love to see a WSUS server and updates in the field. Ive had the opportunity to see some really cool stuff in practice lately but this is one of things I want to know more about in an “in practice” setting. Im so thankful for the opportunities ive had so far but seeing this would be really neat. Im not sure how to do this but there are a few youtube videos on the subject, assuming its probably a good idea to check with some of those. I suppose its an important note that IIS must be installed before you can have WSUS (pronounced w-sus)

I found this one kind of helpful but there is a plethora of videos on this topic with varying degrees of relevance.

 photo 2016-07-05 7_zpsujz1szi5.png

Not a whole lot to talk about here other than the basic question of how do I set up a data collector set. Is this different from establishing one in permon on a client machine? Can I assume that this is getting the same info and can I set this up on one machine and monitor another machine? Im going to say probably but im not sure how to do it off the top of my head.

For not im going to assume that we are doing this locally on one server and that it works like this.

 photo 2016-07-05 1_zps8cgyydea.png

This one is interesting because there are a whole lot of ways to create file shares and as in this case audit file shares. Turns out it this case its the simple method and they do a surprisingly good job of explaining the other options in the answers. However I still don’t know specific examples for expression based auditing. Im sure ill figure it out eventually though.

 photo 2016-07-05 8_zpsoqizdwgb.png

 photo 2016-07-05 9_zpsqzlc8vjk.png

And as usual TechNet has some what of an answer available for us. So according to that expression based should be dealing with something involving read/write but I would love to see a targeted question just so I could clear up for myself exactly what it is.

This question seems tricky but if you have any experience even using these sorts of technologies the answer becomes apparent.

Well if two is a replica then it should replicate so that only leaves two answers and deferred wouldn’t have anything to do with bandwidth.

specifics what?

So im starting to feel like I sort of know what Im doing with server and kind of debate some of these answers as well as debate the relevance of why they are asking the questions they ask. In this set of questions there is one thats such an absurdly specific reminder
of why these tests are so hard, they can ask you literally anything from a huge knowledge base of almost random things. Stuff that you would for sure use google for as opposed to actually having it memorized. I think the point of asking those questions is a reminder that this is really really hard. Its also really really fun if you enjoy challenging things. Fortunately I do.

This first bitlocker question is really cool, I realize that cool might be a bit of a stretch for some people so perhaps interesting would be a better word. So anyway there’s a BDE key issue, what do you do? We are obviously working from the standpoint that the computer is
currently up and running and that the HD hasnt been removed. The two answers I honestly didnt know before hand but are fairly simple. I would have assumed that there was a snap in for this but given that i dont personally have any BDE machines I couldn’t try it. The PS command is just remembering I suppose. It does make me wonder about current process for enterprise BDE key man. I also think BDE is generally worthless for
individuals unless you’re paranoid or doing something illegal. I know I pull hds from old machines and reference data on new builds. It might not be best practice but its easier than transferring data.

This one we kind of discussed in the last post. So you can restore AD account objects through tombstones but you loose some specific data that’s included with them such as what groups the account is a member of. In this case they are suggesting that an authoritative restore is the way to go but my question is where is that restore launched from as they don’t seem to be providing that information. Im not certain that its
absolutely necessary but to know that I guess from any DC that has the back up on it? Im realizing I could know more about this so perhaps its good to watch a video on an authoritative restore? Also once you do this does it replicate to your forest without additional configuration? I feel like thats something that I should know.

Going to start with this recent video:

So one min into this we can see that this guy is suggesting its a good idea to do a force replication. Theres a lot going on here a lot of talk Im feeling like its a good idea to watch this one more than once becuase im not absolutely certain as to what hes doing at times. Anyway, here is the question:

 photo 2016-07-01 24_zpsgggy2wn4.png

Easy enough, no gMSA if your not on 2012.

 photo 2016-07-01 14_zpsox9twghs.png

 photo 2016-07-01 15_zpsjjhhqnae.png

This one is not overly confusing just make a group and apply a PSO as long as your on 08 or better at the forest level. The only thing that can be confusing is the number of options. They make it seem more complicated than it is.

 photo 2016-07-01 11_zps8xtmbaur.png

 photo 2016-07-01 12_zps36vxxmmn.png

Again not much to talk about here, just another locational concept to remember that probably won’t be on the test but more information is better right? You honestly could see something similar though and the domain concept could be important but then we would need to know when to use the .com for the dom and when not to.

 photo 2016-07-04 1_zpsubuvd3gb.png

 photo 2016-07-01 9_zpsvtidncyk.png

This one is just weird, I have no idea what RDC is nor do I think I would find really solid readily available information on it nor do I think its more important than the discussion of SCCM. honestly WTF?

 photo 2016-07-01 16_zpspaqjca6i.png

 photo 2016-07-01 17_zpsoofcbhyt.png

This is the absurdly specific info that I was talking about having to use google for in the intro. I refuse to use brain space to memorize this at this point. Honestly maybe once I was better with the basics, like I completely understood how and why to do an authoritative restore then I would consider it.

 photo 2016-07-01 18_zpswaxkawii.png

 photo 2016-07-01 19_zpsc3nqaylz.png

I had to crop it weird becuase of the crazy long info on version types.

MOor SCCM plz

Had lots of interesting job offers the past few days. None of them will actually lead to employment but it is an encouraging sign. Its exhausting though and takes me out of my study headspace which is both good and frustrating at the same time. I Possibly should come up for air but at the same time I really enjoyed being in an almost autonomous mode where all thought about was what music I was going to listen to and what I needed to learn next. I could also be suffering from what I personally refer to as illidan syndrome where when I get close to finishing something big I just give up or slow down. I promised I wouldn’t let myself do that here and Im getting stoked on going back to class and meeting new people. Its frustrating at times but I guess somehow I can trust that the world will take me where I need to go? That didn’t sound like a question but it still kind of felt like it. I can trust that I will work hard for the most part, some say patients is a virtue but persistence may very well be one as well.

Lets move on to some questions, this first number is about bitlocker, a technology that I sort of got to see the first hand use of during my tenure at SunTrust. Any unencrypted drive gets treatment from a drill press before heading out the door, a process I found enlightening it has nothing to do with this question but its still awesome that they take data that seriously. There isn’t a whole lot of discussion
around this, just memorization.

 photo 2016-06-27 7_zpsjxsmbf21.png

 photo 2016-06-27 8_zpszlwucq89.png

This question isn’t all that confusing but it is specific. To tell the truth I mostly understand it but not completely. Like why is name resolution so important and what are you resolving? Shared resources like drives or are we resolving to things like applications, specific computers? All of the above? Not sure but I have a feeling that if I stick with it ill figure it out.

 photo 2016-06-27 5_zpswq1qnoiq.png

 photo 2016-06-27 6_zpsz9fdie2n.png

Not really a whole lot to discuss other than the confusion around exactly what we are resolving to.

This is more of a strategy thing because you could do a non-authoritative restore but apparently that takes longer. That was honestly my first thought when reading the question but I guess I understand what they are saying in this case.

 photo 2016-06-27 9_zpscoh3ujgg.png

 photo 2016-06-27 10_zps3okzyzqk.png

This is one of those questions that taxes the brain in terms of reading when trying to do a large volume of questions at once. What Ive learned is that most of the time only the last paragraph matters if you are to the point of actually being able to do some what know
what you are doing. In that case this methodology proves mostly true because they only way to not effect (which you dont care what they are or what the other domains are, its just irrelevant information) other users is create a child dom. There probably is a another strat for this but we are not presented with it and im not sure of what it is. The only thing that is of note is the 2003 part, which is where they could get you on an alternate strat if you do know what you are doing. Given that its ’16 the likelihood of you running into this scenario while having a ’03 DC is unlikely but I guess its still and important note.

 photo 2016-06-27 4_zpsb2myjju4.png

This one kind of bothers me because everyone in the field is using SCCM in the field so if you talk about WDS during a deployment people are going to assume you dont know what your talking about. I also honestly dont feel like its wordy enough to get the complete
picture of the answer they want you to have. Ok so they are managed and prestaged, understood? Sorry for the bad crop job.

Again, lots of options, winrm is the only right choice even though they dont say “quick config” and honestly msft is better about this on live tests. See the answer key for what the rest of them do. I really should type out each one as a reminder but its laid out below and I should be able to read it because I highly doubt any one will read this.

As far as I know the terminology is still up to date on this one and the answer is surprisingly the simple one.

Feeling good this morning, excited about going back to class. Cant believe it was actually suggested to me to help me get the last few points I need. I have kind of mixed emotions about the effectiveness but it seems like the only rational thing to do. I guess we will see
where it goes. I also had a job interview so things are kind of getting better on that front. I went to the interview and another company instantly tried to send me to another location for a interview for a temp to perm spot. Its a little too far for me to comfortably get to
every day as there would be about a 2 hour marta commute then a 15 dollar uber ride each way. So much money and time. I guess if it’s offered I should take it and just save for a car but dang thats a whole lot of travel. It would give me lots of time to read though. Anyway lets get into these questions. This first one is actually somewhat tricky I felt less so about the other ones. I also cant believe its been a year since I started this server journey!

 photo 2016-06-23 10_zps4a08uzg6.png

 photo 2016-06-23 11_zpsg77smto2.png

So just remember to do backup if you need to replicate an auditpol. This still doesn’t feel like a complete answer as I have no idea how to actually replicated this import/export process and I highly doubt there is a tutorial on the web any where other than the technet articles for backup and restore.

This one’s easy, just use the recycle bin or restore them.

 photo 2016-06-23_zpshzxn7vs6.png

 photo 2016-06-23 1_zpsf6gaadvn.png

The use AD admin center feels some what vague though insinuates basically the same thing as the recycle bin so i’m kind of confused by this. Im sure there has to be some thing out there in internet land.

 photo 2016-06-23 3_zpsan4qsxdl.png

This is actually very helpful though it has little to do with the topic at hand.

Another helpful tutorial though it has no sound however I think the conclusion im coming to is there are many ways to restore objects and test takers need to be prepaid to deal with any of the options on test day. The other thing of note is that interfaces change so
its probably best to test any methods you see youtube before attempting to rely on them in a live environment.

Unless its this because the recycle bin seems very reliable:

I found this DNS question somewhat confusing but i’m not enough of an expert on the differences between non ad-integrated dns and ad integrated dns to be able to really debate the question. Then if I was an expert on these things I would be less worried about the literally infinite number of questions related to a process such as this that I may not know (see above). Still the question feels vague as if im every time supposed to link security efficiency with something vaguely having to do with secure updates. Not exactly following the line of logic here.

 photo 2016-06-23 6_zpsuz2lphvy.png

 photo 2016-06-23 7_zpst0nqwnqm.png

I think this one is really simple and im not exactly sure how to explain why im including it. Posterity?

 photo 2016-06-23 14_zpsn1g4ar9a.png

 photo 2016-06-23 15_zpsrmgqhg1b.png

I also feel that this one is pretty straightforward though if I was really strong about I was doing I would probably respond with what all the other options did (hopefully im not being redundant) but it would be kind of pointless as the answer key gives us that info. However the point of this exercise is to be able to learn each of these answer.

 photo 2016-06-23 8_zpsys6twjz0.png

 photo 2016-06-23 9_zpstiwmyibk.png

I really really like this question, its basic and it has a solid impact. If you set a GPO as enforced it will ensure it doesn’t get overwritten. That sounds really simple and it kind of is but gpo application can get intense.

 photo 2016-06-23 4_zpsccpxewlg.png

 photo 2016-06-23 5_zpsr4x6qcu1.png

I think this is easy but im not sure why delegation of control wizard is not an option. I also tried to add a mustache to one of the photos using the photobucket editor and that didnt exactly work. completely unrelated notes but I guess the point being you can assign permissions using AD users and computers. However, like everything else realize there are many places to do this.

someone got more free keys

About to get real busy studying again. So im just a little short of passing and spoke with the company that’s training me. I was informed that I could retake the class and
that they could give me new keys for the 70-410 and 70-411 which might help. In the spirit of doing whatever I can to be in a better place to take care of myself im going to go through the 70-411 until im in a passing range that I feel good about and try to test the
70-410 again and see where it gets me. Hopefully Ill have the last 50 points I need on
that one. Very thankful to be able to keep studying and to get some work. Hopefully this streak of luck or whatever will continue into real world experience with 16 best case scenario or keep studying. Hopefully Ill still have the funds for that! Any way I think Im just going to blog the majority of the 163 questions on the 411 practice test as even when I know the right answer there is probably still some information I can glean from the wrong answers.

So this question seems pretty straight forward but we can certainly glean some additional ideas of things that might be good to know serving as building blocks for other questions from the wrong answers. There are a whole lot of answers here:

 photo 2016-06-14 4_zpsn8weqhyu.png

 photo 2016-06-14 5_zpsaz8tknae.png

 photo 2016-06-14 6_zpsjulmtnxz.png

So i realize the answer involves associating a file type but the first problem I have here is i might logically know this but I don’t exactly know how to do it. I don’t have access to server however I do have access to youtube and can get the generic idea from this. Maybe on 16 ill have access to a server. One can hope! I do have this video that’s kind of helpful. I might have actually posted this one before.

So thats helpful but what do the rest of those things do?

    wrong answers

  • service utility – deals with services
  • dism – used to service images for deployment
  • copy-wdsinstallimage – copy an image to a location
  • windows application extension gpp
  • set-wdsinstallimage – from technet:
  • — Change the name of an install image.
  • — Change the description of an install image.
  • — Set the display order of an install image in the image menu.
  • — Specify an answer file for unattended setup of an install image.
  • — Set permissions for users or groups to access the image.
  • new-startergpo – creates a new starter gpo
  • AD users and computers- a management console in server
  • new-adsserviceaccount – creates a new service account that canbe used to logon to servers rather than having to rely on individual accounts

Now that we know that the other questions in this list should be less complicated and we can kind of just do question and answer for the
next two as they require less explanation.

However this one has a few additional que import-wdsinstallimage which should be somewhat self explanatory after the last explanation

 photo 2016-06-14 1_zpsqphnhtfr.png

 photo 2016-06-14 2_zpslwxuea1u.png

 photo 2016-06-14 3_zpsv8lprg20.png

So you can see from the previous one the only confusing option here is set or import and in this case its import. How I usually organize these is by folder names and I just create the sets in alphabetical order seeing as how this is actually question one but im cycling back through it. You’re probably not too worried about that anyway if you’re reading this.

As previously seen this requires a service account

Easy enough, just pick the right nomenclature.

 photo 2016-06-14 10_zpswgnk7lsv.png

 photo 2016-06-14 11_zpsffksfv7p.png

This seems a little more complicated but like the rest of these only complicated if you dont know what your doing. Im to the point of sort of knowing what im doing. The wording around bandwidth is a little sketchy so that could honestly go either way but it clearly says scheduled so we can for sure get that part right. Single stream sounds a lot more steady than multiple stream transfer. There’s not a whole lot of information about this but if this is used a source of info I think we can take this question as an addendum to that. Im not exactly sure that I can reword the ideas but I think I understand them in theory. It would be easier if this were more defined but we are dealing with some pretty high level tech in this case.

None of these have anything to do with reducing replication traffic, creating a secondary zone that is a copy of the primary zone is the only thing that will reduce traffic. If I was being as thorough as I should be I would make myself write out a definition for
each of the ideas listed here. A stub zone doesn’t do a whole lot and would essentially point clients back to the main server keeping traffic volumes the same. An AD integrated zone has more to do with secure updates and has absolutely nothing to do with this scenario.  Conditional forwarding just points all the traffic to another network which is probably not helpful in this case as its most likely trying to resolve from an internal name base. That info was rattled off without looking at the answer so perhaps im getting better.

 photo 2016-06-14 15_zpsybph797t.png

 photo 2016-06-14 16_zpsdw73xk8o.png

This one I am slightly confused by becuase its a setting within a setting a that almost always gets complicated. So beyond just memorizing this question I suppose the point of this exercise is to actually do research however when we read the answer we find out that there is an obscure bit of information that you could need to know involving the link speed (imagine that).

Thats all for tonight but im going to try to get around 10 of these done a day in hopes that I can get that next 50 points in a timely manner. Really happy to get these keys and to possibly be going to class again!

Possibly the last post from measure up

This is my 15th post like this, if nothing else im persistent. I dont think I have a superior intellect when it comes to memorization, I mean I had trouble remembering the word ambitious today lol. So I guess im going to have to rely on my work ethic to get me through
this. I feel like it possibly could but we will see how it goes. Anyway here’s my possible last set of questions to post from measureup. Hopefully Ill have more of these to post at some point this year.

This is another one where I have no clue how I missed it, I knew this one. The printer one is slightly confusing but this one isn’t. Well it isn’t confusing once you understand the basic premise of what its asking.

 photo 2016-06-04 3_zps99cvnvs2.png

 photo 2016-06-04 4_zpsl7okymof.png

Honestly maybe im juggling too many things at once but if I wasn’t im not sure if I would be as good at the other three so I’ll just have to deal with it.

 photo brain-full_zpsqerwp1mz.jpg

This one actually is tricky and I have blogged it before but thats ok, im going to again just so the idea sinks in.

 photo 2016-06-04 11_zps2ad1qsmq.png

The exhibit shows absolutely nothing, not really necessary in this case. However I also feel that i selected delete the three volumes and so how the question shows up as wrong. I understand why im supposed to do that so Im not sure how I missed this one.

 photo 2016-06-04 12_zpsqihsm2xh.png

 photo 2016-06-04 13_zps3pkrofqw.png

Also pretty sure im 100% I know this one so again, not sure how I got it wrong.

 photo 2016-06-04 5_zpsxoggrfmz.png

I suppose its possible got I got the placement of the adapted and driver confused?

 photo 2016-06-04 6_zpstvhwe4iy.png

This one does actually confuse me because of what I understand about start up memory and how it works and how you can tweek it to essentially overclock your physical ram or allocate more than you actually have. But that’s not what we need to do in this case. Here we shut the machine down, reduce the overhead and try both after a restart.

 photo 2016-06-04 16_zpscosrb0el.png

 photo 2016-06-04 17_zpsbg1z3n6e.png

This one also genuinely confused me for some reason while taking the test. Looking at it now I realize that I know the answer.

 photo 2016-06-04 14_zps8199nauf.png

 photo 2016-06-04 15_zpsis9s428b.png

Makes me think I shouldn’t be spreading myself so thin in terms of what all i’m consuming academically.

Getting down test time.

Havent posted in a while because ive been busy working (surprisingly), gaming at the local comic shop and generally just going through test questions. I feel that im just about ready to take the test again and im fairly certain ill fail but it will be by a small margin and if that happens im going to try the official MSFT pretest and see if that can’t get me up to passing on my last free shot. Im not completely convinced that its passable but im also not convinced that im capable of passing it at my current level of experience/knowledge.
Im hoping to get an MCSA at some point but it for sure will not be on 2012 and who knows if “god” will see fit that a person such as myself should be so presumptuous as to assume that i might be allowed to be so ambitious mostly just for fun because its clearly not making me rich. Anyway I guess we can get into the last 9 that I got wrong on a test that provided 45 questions done in 30 mins with a 71. I think there are also a few in this lot that are from a test where I tried all the questions and got a 90 but it wasn’t timed.

Im honestly not sure how I got this one wrong. I know this one, you enable it (it being branch office printing) on the server and then update.

I think I got this one wrong on my test where I scored a 71, an 80 is passing on measure up and I really feel like I knew this one so it’s a bit disappointing that I got it wrong.

This is memorizing and I just got it wrong. note to self, its the long one with “yes” other than that im clueless and im sure it will probably change with the next version of PS so im not really sweating it.

I also know this one for sure so im not sure how I got it wrong but apparently I did so im posting it here to remind myself of the correct answer.

No complicated ideas that require videos here, just remember where a task is done. It almost seems like it should be PowerShell but its not for some reason. So if you need to protect something from accidental deletion, ADAC. Got it. Maybe.

I have 5 more to do and I will take care of those later tonight. None of them should take too long either, thankfully. I wonder how hard the MSFT test will be. Hopefully I will learn a whole bunch of new stuff from it. Actually, hopefully I’ll just pass the test and not have to
worry about it.

More random questions that I dont completely understand from measureup

Attempting some hard stuff this afternoon, math. It’s easier than what’s on the test but I guess I should still be able to perform the basics of IP computation. Maybe that’s worth something, karma points maybe? Or at least explaining to an interviewer that I sort of
know how to do basic IPv4 subnetting and understand CIDR but would like to know more about full DHCP configurations if its possible to learn those sorts of things. Im also doing a few more questions that I normally do with this set, its just what came up so I’ve got my
work cut out for me this afternoon.

I have literally no clue as to why I would need to clear a subnet id but its important to know that to clear it I set it to 1 and not 0 I suppose.

 photo 2016-05-09 5_zpsig1p0nlp.png

Maybe I should google this to find out why on earth I would do this? If a google it an article
comes up with an author. I think I will email becuase it says he helps nubs in his spare time. Im a certified nubsace with a side order of mcfail when it comes to server for sure. Maybe Ill get a reply or maybe ill get a dont talk to me and go order a fish filet answer haha

Update: I did email the guy, havent gotten a response yet.

This on is a little more interesting with a little less required research, at least for me becuase I try to be through or whatever. So it seems sort of obvious that you should have a comparable box to create an IFM from but maybe not. It reminds the importance of
upgrading. It also somehow reminds me of how inexperienced I am with sever and how long I had been studying work stations at the point which I was testing for a client cert. Not sure why it reminds me of that, it just does.

Like everything else just becuase I one time had a eureka moment with figuring out IP stuff that doesn’t mean I regularly understand it and don’t need to keep going over the same material. This question is one of straight memorization and I can do that for this
but if I was asked anything other than public space I would have literally no clue. The other problem that comes in is that this language in no way directly translates to any cheat sheet that I can find so unless I have a teacher i’m really screwed.

heres the question in question:

 photo 2016-05-09 16_zpsaexvoipp.png

Heres the article that the answer references: TechNet

As you can see there is no consistent dialogue or answer key to successfully navigate between the two sets of terms, at least that I can find.

There’s so many questions around RDP that they all kind of start to run together and seem like the same questions with multiple ways to answer them. At least this one is about firewalls which kind of takes a second to process and leaves me with a few more questions about what other commands I can use to control firewalls

 photo 2016-05-09 10_zpsipjfdlar.png

 photo 2016-05-09 11_zpsqfobbm0z.png

Im sure ill probably learn more about this later on down the road depending on circumstances of a production environment.

This one is also not that complicated its just remembering where to click to subdivide a DHCP scope. I cant find a video walking through this but I did find this lab that seems really cool.

Lots of solid additional info on this one.

I really have no idea where to even start with this one and it makes me want to cry like a 5 year old that dropped his ice cream off the cone. Im not sure if its just me that thinks balancing the stuff that sits outside the shell difficult or if average human hands were just not designed for such feats of balance. I’m honestly not even sure I should try to figure this out without some professional help. I really honestly do wish I could find a book or some resource that would lead me to an answer to this problem.

Honestly clueless here, perhaps we could improve training materials a little in the math area? Not one of the 4 books ive read has much information about this. Its not something that is worth covering in ~4k pages of material? </endrant>

In case your curious here is the link that’s mentioned in the answer text TechNet

This next one is do-able, memorize a cheat sheet or basically be able to recreate one (which I haven’t seen any questions related to math that where this simple on the test) and your good. So this is a class A network and then you just search till you find the right number of host addresses. I like this math, its not nearly as impossible as the idea of balancing a melting ice cream ball on top of a cone in the hot summer sun.

The answer makes it sound more complicated than it possibly is but as I’ve previously mentioned I can’t recommend the series subnetting demystified
that’s on youtube enough.

More review questions…from the start

In the waning days of server 2012 I find myself reviewing the same items and as usual wishing that I could actually walk through in practice the ideas being displayed in the questions. However that’s not an option. The good news is that I did get a few days of work which brings my resume up to a more current position and the garden is producing its first tomatoes. I also had the chance to plant a nice small christmas tree looking dwarf fur this morning in a open spot near the front porch that has needed some thing for a while.
Thoroughly enjoying yard work these days and getting accustomed to the way of life of the american homeowner. Something I think most millennials are completely oblivious to for some reason. Thankful to not have to go through this process on my own as the concepts of yard work would be completely foreign to me as an independant person.

Im also sort of pondering ideas on employment. I assume at some point that if it’s good for me or the world or whatever then I’ll eventually get a job at some point. It is a little stressful to think about but its not really something I can choose to worry over as i’m being proactive and faithful in my duties with pre-employment and trying to be a faithful human with an attitude of servanthood being a priority in my life. Sitting around and not just waiting for a job offer while doing nothing to increase your personal value isnt a
very good way to commoditize your self. Weather you like it or not we are all commodities and we have the choice to make ourselves more or less valuable based on our actions. After our actions prove us to be true we have little control over what actually happens
however I find that the individual truly seeking to be a value add will not fear this unknown factor.

Anyway found some gaps in going through the front end of the block of 175 questions that I felt like might be worth covering. Who knows how many of these Ill do but I found that reviewing questions in this format was almost as helpful as actually going through
the process on the server in terms of committing the ideas to memory. Anyway heres some review:

Just an important note that 10 is a higher priority than 1. Not really too much to discuss.

Don’t forget MBR is limited to 2 tb. Nothing to do with data de-duplication but I guess the combination of factors and ideas generated a greater comprehension?

Smart paging is confusing to me. From my research on a previous question it seems like a way, albeit sketchy, to over commit physical ram to hyper-v machines running on a host. This article appears to be be in conflict with this question:

Imagine that a host has been over committed and each VM is using the bare minimum amount of memory. Now imagine that one of the VMs is rebooted. Upon reboot, the VM will try to claim the startup RAM, which is not available because the memory is
overcommitted. This is where the Smart Paging File comes into play. Rather than allowing the VM boot to fail, the Smart Paging File is used to make up for shortages in RAM. Unlike the Windows Pagefile however, the Smart Paging File is only used by the boot process. It is not used for routine memory paging operations.

The only way to figure this is out is to actually test it which I may actually contact someone to ask. Ill decide if its worth that or if I should wait until I could possibly try it out for myself one day. Either way its an interesting proposition that will for now require a commitment to memory rather than it being a discussion as there is a right and a wrong answer.

 photo 2016-05-08 2_zpsj1f0kaxs.png

The only problem with this conflict is that as previously mentioned the solution in this article seems like such a scrubbish solution to the problem at hand. Perhaps this can server as a horribly obvious reminder that not everything on the internet is factually helpful and this is probably for home users that wish to essentially overclock rather than an enterprise solution.

I wish it was easier to include more of these questions with lots of options but its such a pain to blog about them for various reasons.  I think in the end simply getting these two serves as a decent review for me. This also feels like its way over complicated. Like we are
not using a gui at all or what’s wrong with this scenario? This has the feel of commit to memory becuase it’s like high school geometry, possibly helpful but not very often. Tonight on scare tactics…

Today’s efforts

Interesting few days here at the….whatever camp this is (stevie bs chicken a la king a la carte?). Had the opportunity to install a massive number of laptops for testing purposes. I walked into a room with 3 pallets of netbooks and thought I had arrived at an all
you can eat buffet of technology setting up. It was awesome. Also got to take a field trip to a bar that specializes in comic books. Very amazing, they have a good selection and seem knowledgeable about beer and comics. That’s a rare find. I like good beer but it sure
does sit heavy on the stomach and ABV. I could seriously see that being an amazing establishment for a dude that’s reached the depths of nerdom that I have to go and buy this week’s issues or a trade and sit and drink beer while being totally oblivious to any social activities that might be going on. Yeah if I was a working man I would probably do that often. I guess I can do that at home and drink coffee as I recently discovered my local library has a large amount of x-men trades that will probably take me years to read though. I would like to read through them all though because im just that nerdy and they are just that free.

So we have a lot of 4 questions today and then I go through the prep exam until im hitting the 90s then consider testing again or trying to get a passing score on the 70-411 test. I’ve decided that im not going to study the math portion at this point because it feels like a black hole where I know what’s on the test and I have no idea where to find the resources to study for it. Which leads me to the realization that I possibly just wont do well on that portion and hopefully I can skate by on my core server skills sets.

The first question displays an error that would show up if you created a security group as a distro group. Distro groups have very limited use and to be honest outside of exchange im not sure what they are used for. Or how their creation and existence works within office 365.  Actually im unsure of a whole lot of things when it comes to the actual implementation of office 365, hopefully Ill get to see it use in an office one day. Or a homeless shelter.

This is the first time I have heard of a DACL. I guess this is kind of a one off issue as its using powershell. Surely there is a way to convert in the GUI. Might not be a bad thing to look up. Of course we come across a real gem of a video, how did this guy program
himself into server like that one video from MTV!!!?!

Jokes aside this idea of mail enabled groups, is this possible with security groups? Man this makes me feel like such a n00b. This video isn’t exactly helpful for this question but it is amusing.

On a more serious note this is possibly the best video or general source of information about groups that I have seen so far and it does explain the ideas mentioned above although it doesn’t explain how to convert in the GUI.

Although this is fairly helpful in that regard even though its a little old its a great article with screenshots.

From what I understand which is limited, since everything is theoretical and nothing in practice, a server should pretty much never be assigned an IP using DHCP. Im not completely sure why as network resources on computers using DHCP are still available but I think that’s just how it works for some reason. I understand thinks like DNS servers have to have static ips as the address is given when DHCP occurs but other than that Im not exactly clear on why. Even that though, shouldn’t a DHCP server be smart enough to recognize a DNS server and realize the address that its giving out then update itself? I suppose this could cause some errors in non renewed machines leading to a big headache in case of a restart. Anyway lets get on the actual question.

 photo 2016-04-22 16_zpsjn7itxw6.png

 photo 2016-04-22 15_zps8txprfc5.png

After looking at these two pieces of information I’m still only certain of a few things, register DNS has nothing to do with the problem, it appears to have an enabled NIC and judging by the answer this leaves something to do with DHCP that I have no idea how to actually deduce from the question.

 photo 2016-04-22 17_zpsy6z27yt0.png

So im going to argue not with the answer but the explanation, you should configure it with a static ip because its a server then refresh. It doesn’t make sense to say choose two right answers, that’s absurd. configure with a static ip and be done with it. Assuming that you
still have to run a renew after configuring a static ip otherwise the whole scenario just seems bunk. Im sure there is someone out there that could make this scenario make sense to me and I would like to meet that person as I have so many questions about servers
and DHCP.

This is one is really straightforward, if you need to reduce CPU clock cycles enable SR-IOV. Kind of the end of the story.
